3 Tips to Know When Buying CBD for Dogs (Oil, Treats, or Biscuits)

Is your canine companion in pain? Furry friend not as energetic as they once were? Puppy pal struggling with anxiety? CBD oil can help.

Whether your dog is young or old, there is a range of products containing CBD oil for pets that may be able to help. These products have been designed for safe use in smaller animals and have been known to make their lives a little easier.

Widely praised for its potential uses in improving the health of us two-legged animals, CBD oil can be just as effective for pets!

CBD oil for pets: How does it work?

Just like us, most other mammals have an endocannabinoid system that processes the endocannabinoids created in our bodies. CBD is a phytocannabinoid, or “plant cannabinoid”, which is present in the cannabis sativa plant and is extracted for its health benefits. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, is an antioxidant, and reduces pain among a variety of other potential benefits. But, unlike cannabis sativa’s other well-known cannabinoid, THC, CBD has no intoxicating properties and lacks the “high” commonly associated with cannabis use, making it ideal for treating pets.

CBD oil for pets: how can it help?

While medical research is severely lacking when it comes to the uses of CBD oil for pets, knowing that most animals have an endocannabinoid system like ours, it has been assumed that CBD oil can have a similar impact in pets. Due to its powerful ability to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and even reduce seizures, CBD oil can have powerful implications for pets  who are suffering.

It is worth noting that of the few studies that do exist around cannabis and its use for dogs, in particular, have focused on THC and its potential dangers. Dogs have more endocannabinoid receptors in the brain than humans do and that make them more suspectable to the effects of THC. In short, THC can be toxic to dogs. But the good news is that CBD oil products, especially CBD oil for pets, do not have THC in them and are generally considered safe for use. In fact, the American Kennel Club’s Canine Health Foundation has partnered with the University of Colorado to fund a study into the use of CBD oil for dogs with epilepsy!

The CEO and founder of VETCBD, Dr. Tim Shu, reports that due to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system, CBD can give dogs relief from an array of physiological conditions, by ‘modulating the chemical components’ that are responsible for pain, nausea, infection, seizures and gastrointestinal complaints.

Additionally, neurological conditions can also be helped by CBD. Aggressive or skittish dogs that are triggered by external stimuli may be calmed by the relaxing effects of CBD oil, reducing anxiety and stress.

Top tips when buying CBD oil for pets

With hundreds of CBD products aimed at pets, knowing what to look for is the biggest hurdle challenge for most pet parents. Before you purchase CBD oil for your pet, check out these tips to ensure you’re looking in the right direction and getting the most bang for your buck!

#1. Quality

Don’t waste your money on inferior CBD products; do your research. Quality is important when you’re buying any supplement, so you need to ensure that all products you buy meet the same standards you’d apply to anything you would consume yourself. Always opt for products that are organic, and free of pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

One of the most effective ways to ensure the quality of any CBD oil for pets is to look for a product that has been third-party laboratory tested. Some CBD oil manufacturers only test products themselves and, well, they’re not exactly an unbiased source! Instead, look for companies who are confident enough in what they produce that they allow a third party to test their CBD products.

At Green Door CBD, we’ve done this work for you. All pet products we carry are from reputable, trusted brands who produce vegan and organic products that are lab tested for quality and purity.

#2. Dosage/Concentration

When it comes to CBD oil for pets, understanding the right dosage is incredibly important. Too little and they may not experience the benefits, too much and you’re pouring money down the drain by wasting product. Any reputable company will provide a suggested dosage chart to give you a starting point based on your dog’s weight, but there are a few other things to keep in mind:

  • If your dog is taking any additional medication, you may be best to start on a lower dosage and gradually increase it over time if necessary.
  • CBD is processed at different rates, weight alone doesn’t take this into account. You may well find that the “sweet spot” for your pooch is slightly more or less than recommended.
  • Consider whether or not the product you choose will allow you to increase or decrease the dosage. If you are using CBD for the general health of your pet a daily dose is likely to be fine, but if you want to alleviate pain or anxiety finding the right dosage is key; in this case, CBD oil drops are ideal because they give you more control over the amount you can administer at any given time.

#3. Processing time

As with dosage, processing time can play an important role when choosing a CBD product for your pet. Depending on the method of intake, the amount of time it takes CBD oil to be processed by the body can vary.

CBD which is consumed, as in treats and biscuits, is processed through the digestive system. This makes it the slowest administration route but having said that, you should still be able to see effects within 30 minutes of ingestion.

Tinctures and drops can produce faster results. Because the CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream through the thin skin under the tongue,  it could give your results within 5-10 minutes. Of course, if your dog is fussy, it may be difficult to get the drops underneath the tongue. But, rest assured, that any amount you manage to get into the mouth will be absorbed so you aren’t wasting a dose!

If you are simply using CBD oil for your pets’ general health, administration routes may not factor your decision-making process. But, if you are using CBD to relieve stress, anxiety, or pain, you may want to choose a product that will have a quick impact.

How to administer CBD oil for pets

Actually getting your dog to take CBD might be the trickiest part of the process. Luckily, there is a range of products out there that will have your pup licking its lips in anticipation! From poultry-flavored soft chews to CBD infused peanut butter, even the fussiest dog will be wagging with joy!

If you are opting for CBD oil tincture, you can either add it directly into your dog’s food or just squeeze the dropper under the tongue (cleaning well afterward, of course).

As mentioned above, it is best to start with a lower dose and work your way up to a higher dose if necessary. You know your pet, monitor their behavior and reaction to determine if you have found the right amount.

Using CBD oil for pets can require some trial and error. You may have to try a few different products and a few different doses before you figure out what will work the best. But, if you follow the tips outlined above and keep a watchful eye on your pup, you should be able to find the solution that works best.
