CBD Oil For Dogs: 10 Things You Didn't Know

Because we love our dogs like family, we only want the best for them. It is only natural to want to keep them happy and healthy for as long as possible. CBD oil has incredible potential for supporting health and wellbeing in humans but it can also be effective for dogs!

While research into the uses of CBD oil for dogs is ongoing, there is already some available evidence to suggest that it can be a useful natural supplement for our canine companions.

Here are 10 things about CBD oil for dogs that you probably didn’t know:

1. CBD Oil Will Not Get Your Dog “Stoned”

Given that CBD oil is derived from a member of the cannabis plant family, pet owners are understandably concerned that their dog may end up “stoned.”

The good news is that CBD oil will not cause a high. Cannabidiol (CBD) is not the same as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the cannabinoid that is responsible for intoxication and is only present in CBD oil products in trace amounts (less than 0.3%), if at all.

The CBD used in CBD oil for dogs and other pets comes from industrial hemp plants meaning it is naturally low in THC. Simply put, CBD oil can deliver all of the potential supplemental benefits of CBD oil without any of the intoxication.

    2. CBD Oil For Dogs Is Safe

There are many horror stories out there about dogs who have consumed cannabis and experienced a fatal reaction. But, those disastrous reactions were caused by THC. THC is toxic to dogs and cats.

Dogs and humans have a similar endocannabinoid system. The primary difference is that dogs and cats have more cannabinoid receptors than humans. This means they are far more susceptible to the effects of THC. When a human consumes too much THC, they will feel intoxicated and at worst, a little nauseous. In our furry friends, THC overwhelms the system amounting to a poison.

While CBD does not lead to toxicity, you still have to consider the CBD oil products you give to your dog very carefully. It is always best to look for a product that is specially formulated for pets. They will contain lower concentrations of CBD, making it easier for their smaller bodies to metabolize it.

Some essential oils found in CBD oil products for humans can be toxic to animals so if you are not using a pet-specific product, it is best to research all of its ingredients first.

    3. CBD Oil For Dogs May Reduce Anxiety

While most of the scientific studies have focused on humans, anecdotally, CBD oil has shown promise in reducing anxiety in dogs.

Like humans, dogs experience anxiety for a whole host of reasons. It can be difficult to watch a pet suffer in this way and sometimes the behaviors associated with anxiety are less than desirable. Instead of cleaning up in-house accidents or worrying about potential fear biting, it makes sense to try and treat the anxiety itself.

In 2015, researchers reviewed the existing studies on CBD oil and anxiety. Included in the review were studies performed on mice, rats, and humans. The results of these studies showed that CBD oil exhibited anti-anxiety effects and was able to reduce generalized anxiety and obsessive behaviors.

      4. CBD Oil For Dogs May Reduce Inflammation

One of the greatest potential uses for CBD oil is in the reduction of inflammation. Many older dogs are slowed down by achy, painful, inflamed joints. No one wants to see their beloved pet looking old and CBD oil may be able to help.

Inflammation is an immune response and CBD oil can regulate that response. One study found that when dogs with osteoarthritis were given CBD, there was an increase in activity and a reduction in pain.

        5. CBD Oil For Dogs May Reduce Pain

In humans, CBD oil has been found to be effective at reducing pain. And given that dogs have a similar endocannabinoid system, it makes sense that it would work for them in much the same way.

CBD oil interacts with receptors and neurotransmitters to reduce not only inflammation but also pain perception. These effects, combined with CBD oil’s anti-anxiety potential, can help your dog feel better, enabling both of you to get more out your time together.

          6. CBD Oil For Dogs May Reduce Seizures

Epilepsy and seizure disorders in pets are treated with medications that can reduce the frequency of seizures but cause damage to the liver so it is understandable that people are looking for a more natural solution.

Seizures are experienced by as much as 5% of the canine population and it can be a difficult and stressful scenario for both you and your dog.

CBD oil has already been approved for use in children and adults with epilepsy and research is currently being conducted into the use of CBD oil for dogs with epilepsy.

The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation has teamed up with Colorado State University to conduct a clinical trial in the hopes of determining whether or not CBD oil is an effective treatment for dogs with treatment-resistant epilepsy.

            7. CBD Oil For Dogs May Boost Heart Health

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD oil may be able to promote cardiovascular health in your dog.

While the research into CBD oil and canine heart health are limited, there is some interesting anecdotal evidence available. One veterinarian used CBD oil to treat a dog with severe arthritis and a significant heart murmur. After treatment, the murmur disappeared.

The exact ways that CBD oil works to protect the heart are not fully understood at this time but it is believed to reduce the harm caused by damaged blood vessels while reducing inflammation and lowering blood pressure.

              8. CBD Oil For Dogs May Increase Appetite

CBD is known to increase appetite.

Nausea and vomiting are the primary reasons that dogs lose their appetite. Whether your dog has been into something it shouldn’t or is having a reaction to medication it is taking, a loss of appetite can be distressing for everyone involved.

Giving CBD oil to dogs has been found to both reduce nausea and restore appetite, thus enabling your dog to get the nutrition it needs to make a full recovery.

                9. CBD Oil Is Easy to Administer

If your dog is traditionally difficult to medicate, you’re in luck because there are a few different ways you can administer CBD oil.

CBD oil infused dog treats can be a delicious option but sometimes dogs are a little picky. If that’s the case in your home, you can try a CBD oil tincture that can be given directly under the tongue or added to food.

CBD oil infused peanut butter and coconut oil are great options if your dog is already accustomed to one or the other as a treat. As an added bonus, the infused coconut oil can be used topically to improve skin conditions while providing all its other potential benefits.

                  10. Not All CBD Oil Products For Dogs Are Organic

Unfortunately, not all products are created equal.

When looking for a CBD oil for your dog, it is important to buy a high-quality, organic product. If you wouldn’t eat it, why should your dog?

Organic CBD oil products are free from pesticides and chemicals that may be dangerous to your pup. At Green Door CBD, all the products we carry are organic and vegan, making shopping for your dog (and for yourself!) so much easier.

                    Buying CBD Oil for Dogs

When buying CBD oil for dogs, it is important to do your homework.

In terms of dosage, start at the lowest recommended amount. Monitor your dog and only increase the dose if absolutely necessary.

As mentioned above, buying an organic product is a must. Carefully check the ingredients list to make sure there is nothing included that can be harmful to your pet. Before making a purchase, you will want to look for certificates of analysis to ensure there is no THC in the final product and that it is free from all chemicals and artificial ingredients. This will also tell the exact amount of CBD in the product, confirm that the amount listed on the label is indeed accurate.

At Green Door CBD, we’ve done all of this hard work for you. We have hand selected all the products in our store and only work with the most trustworthy brands in the CBD market. Only the best will do.
