What is Organic CBD?
CBD products are taking the wellness market by storm.
This article explains the term “organic CBD,” unpacking git and explaining exactly what it means. Not all CBD products are created equal and you need to understand what to look for to get the most of your CBD.
The way the hemp is grown and the CBD extraction method all play a role in the quality of the final product.
Here’s everything you need to know to shop confidently for the best organic CBD
What do we mean by ‘organic’?
Organic is a word that is bandied about a lot, but what does it really mean?
Essentially, organic foods and plants are grown without using any synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, pesticides, sewage sludge or ionizing radiation. They are simply the natural plant, grown as nature intended.
People who seek out natural CBD often want an organic product. This is because organic farming practices are less harmful for the environment and the final product will be free of any harmful and unnatural chemicals.
When it comes to CBD oil, many people simply don’t want to use products that are not totally natural. Organic practices go with the ethos that when plants aren’t exposed to loads of fertilizers and pesticides, they produce more phytochemicals like CBD.
So, by growing an organic plant, farmers are producing something purer and stronger. For CBD products, where potency is a critical factor, this is significant.
What does “certified organic” mean?
To be certified as organic in the USA, farmers and producers need to meet certain standards as set out by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Along with prohibiting the use of sewage sludge, irradiation, synthetic fertilizers, and genetic engineering, the USDA also sets out the following standards which need to be met, in order for a CBD producer to be considered eligible for certified organic status:
- The hemp seeds must be completely organic: organic standards start at the very beginning of the farming journey.
- The land on which the hemp plants are grown must have been free of all prohibited substances for at least three years before the organic crop is harvested.
- Any weeds, pests or diseases affecting the hemp crop can only be treated by managing them, for example, by physically or mechanically removing them. There is a National List of USDA approved treatments, ranging from botanical to biological and synthetic. But these are only to be considered if the physical control of pests, weeds, and diseases has not proved to be effective.
- To encourage soil fertility and the healthy growth of the hemp plants, farmers must either cover crops, rotate them, or cultivate and till the crop area. CBD producers may also use natural waste, whether from animals or from other crops, to help with the growth process.
If you are looking to buy organic CBD, then do some research into the farms your producer uses. To be truly organic, the hemp plants must be handled carefully and not come into contact with any harmful substances.
Why organic CBD products are better?
So, when it comes to CBD products, you should always shop organic. As we have seen, an organic product often means that the plant that the CBD is extracted from is purer and free from unwanted chemicals. But it can also mean that the CBD oil extraction process is kinder to the plant, yielding higher grade cannabidiol with a fuller spectrum.
Buying organic CBD products gives you the reassurance that the hemp plant was grown while fostering ecological balance and promoting biodiversity. Simply put, the farmer is doing good: improving soil and water quality, and looking after the local ecological system and all the wildlife that lives within it.
For many, it is also important to look for organic CBD products which are vegan - that is to say, products which have been farmed without the use of any animal waste. Again, if this is a priority for you, do your research on exactly where it is that your CBD is coming from.
